The height of the grass makes one of the biggest differences for a lush, healthy lawn. Cutting your grass too low when it’s actively growing can harm the stems and cause damage to the grass.
Grass height should be maintained at 3-4 inches throughout the year, especially mid summer with our heat waves. Grass lower than 3 inches when hot and humid temperatures are more susceptible to long term damages and diseases, especially if mother nature does not provide any rainfall.
Set your mowing height to the highest setting to reduce stress on the grass. Longer grass blades provide shade to the soil helping retain moisture and prevent weed growth. Avoid cutting more than one third of the grass height in a single mowing.
Longer grass promotes a healthy lawn with strong roots. Tall grass blades allow for increased photo synthesis leading to a strong root system that can better absorb water and nutrients from the soil. This translates to more resilient lawn that can withstand drought and other stresses.
